When you and your new baby are ready the midwives will help you get your baby latched on and initiate breastfeeding.   Some babies will latch before the placenta is born.  Of course, at home there is no separation of mother and baby during these first crucial hours of bonding.
After the birth you and your baby can relax in a warm herbal bath that feels so good on a tender perineum and safely cleans the baby.  Carol and her birth assistant, who is another Licensed Midwife, will monitor you and your newborn closely taking frequent assessments to insure your well being.  We try to be as unobtrusive as possible and still ensure your safety.  After you and your baby have both had a good meal, the midwives will tuck you in bed for some well deserved rest.
Carol will return to your home around 24 hours postpartum to ensure breastfeeding is going well and obtain the first Newborn Screen.   Between three to five days postpartum Carol will conduct another home visit to ensure you are both transitioning well.
Carol will electronically file your baby’s Birth Certificate and apply for your baby’s Social Security Card.  At two weeks you and your newborn will come to the office for a postpartum visit and the second Newborn Screen.  Six weeks postpartum the office visit includes a liquid pap and family planning counseling.
Of course, Carol is available for consultation 24 hours a day by phone.
We want to make sure you and your baby get the best start on your new life together.
